Achieving Balance : The Impact and Challenges of Global languages Dominance

Abstract

In linguistic studies, we understand that reality only exists for human when it is named, that is, linguistic signs are ways of understanding and capturing reality. We can only see/perceive/understand of the World what we can name. In short, language organizes the world. The present study analyzes the complex scenario of global linguistic dominance, with emphasis on the disparities between the most  widely spoken and marginalized languages. The 17^th witnessed the surge of the industrial revolution , which augmented Britain’s economic and military  prowess, ushering in its era as a global hegemon  and the “Empire on which the sun never sets” (Allen, 2017) . Through a literature review and analysis of  qualitative data, we seek to understand the Impact to the  historical, political, economic,  cultural  and education factors that contribute to the concentration of linguistic power in a limited number of languages. In addition, the work discusses the implications of this dominance for linguistic diversity cultural identity and access to information.
